William Berkeley, of "Oakland", Prince Edward Co., VA.
George Armistead (known as the "Hero of Fort McHenry") was appointed 2nd Lieutenant United States Aramy January 8, 1799; Captain, November 1, 1806; Major 3rd Artillery, March 3, 1813; was distinguished at the capture of Fort George, Upper Canada, May 18, 1813, and was brevetted Lt. Col. for the defense of Fort McHenry, September 12, 1814.
He is buried next to his nephew, Confederate General Lewis Armistead, who was killed at the Battle of Gettysburg, Civil War.
His first name may have been Walter. Further research is needed.
Col. Frank Stanley Armistead, C.S.A., graduated from West Point, and was a lieutenant in the United States Army. During the Civil War he was a Colonel, C.S.A.
