Gen. George Baylor, one of Caroline County, Virginia's most illustrious sons, was a son of John Baylor, III, and was born at Newmarket in 1752. He was educated in England. He was a member of the Caroline Committee of Safety and entered the Continental Army at the outbreak of the Revolutionary War. As a lieutenant-colonel, he was aide-de-camp to Gen. Washington from August 1775, to January 1777. When he brought news of the victory over the Hessians to Congress, that body voted that a horse, properly caparisoned, be presented to him.
