John Carter built "Sudley", a plantation north of "Pittsylvania" in Prince William Co., VA, on land given him by his father Landon Carter. The property was one-half of an estate, the other half which was given to his brother Landon. John Carter, of "Sudley", Prince William Co., VA.
Landon Carter, son of Robert "King" Carter, was of "Sabine Hall" in Richmond Co., VA. He resided there with his second wife, Maria Byrd.

Landon Carter was graduated from the Military Academy at West Point. He died unmarried, and was buried in the limits of Grayson, (KY), in the rear of the dwelling built and occupied by the late Dr. William A. Horton. He was the only member of the Carter family who was buried in Carter County, KY. ("Early Familes of Eastern and Southeastern Kentucky).
