"It is said that Samuel Couch owned and tilled the land on which West Philadelphia is located. He moved to Virginia about 1777, buying several thousand acres of land in Goochland County. He was a large slaveholder, but becoming a Quaker, liberated his slaves". (Source: "The Cabells and Their Kin", Brown, p. 349).
