Notes

Philip Pendleton Cooke

Philip Pendleton Cooke, author of the immortal, "Florence Vane". He graduated from Princeton in the class of 1834, studied law and practiced for many years. His early life was spent at "Glengary", his father's residence near Winchester, Virginia, where he used to write poetry and amuse himself with an Aeolian harp. He became early an indefatigable hunter and a fine shot. His first poems were published in the Southern Literary Messenger, edited then by Poe, who had a very high opinion of Mr. Cooke's productions.

He died at "The Vineyard", where he contracted pneumonia, caught in riding through the Shenandoah on a hunting expedition.
