John Mayo Pleasant Atkinson Rev.
At the outbreak of the Civil War, the students of Hampden Sidney College organized themselves into a company, of which Dr. Atkinson was chosen Captain, and they entered the Confederate services. Early in the war they were made prisoners by Gen. George B. McClellan, at Rich Mountain, in West Virginia. They were later paroled, and Dr. Atkinson returned to his duties at the college, which he continued to discharge until his death, August 28, 1883.
