Col. James Collier served with distinction in the Revolutionary War, as Sergeant of Cavalry in Capt. Philip Taliaferro's Company, 2nd VA. Regt. He was wounded in the cheek by a sabre gash.

He was a Burgess, High Sheriff of York County; member of the King's Council, and Speaker of the House of Burgesses. He married three times.
