Raleigh Edward Colston Brig. Gen.

Brigadier General Raleigh Edward Colston, CSA. Prior to the Civil War he was adopted, as a youth, by a Virginia physician and came to the United States in 1842. He was a professor at the Virginia Military Institute (his alma mater), 1846-1861. His only important command was at Chancellorsville, where he led a division. He held minor assignments for most of the war. After the war he was a colonel in the Egyptian army in the 1870s. He returned to the United States in 1879. He died, in poverty, on July 29, 1896.
