Chichester, Daniel McCarty "Mac" Sgt. Major, 10th Va. Arty.; b. Fairfax County, 8/20/34; son of William Henry & Jane Elliot (Peyton) Chichester; grad. Wm & Mary Coll. 1853; taught school at Mr. Stone's Academy, Brunswick County, VA. m/1 Julia Sully, Alexandria, VA, 4/171860; attorney; voted for secession at Fairfax C.H. 4/23/61; enlisted Pvt., Co. D, 17th Va. Inf. 5/13/61 at Fairfax Station; promoted Cpl.; captured at Frayser's Farm 6/30/62; sent to Ft. Columbus, NY Harbor and then to Ft. Warren, MA; release 7/31/62 for exchange; wounded at Sharpsburg, MD 9/17/62; trans. 2/11/63 Stuart's Horse Arty., McGregor's Battery; appointed Sgt. Major; absent 1/64-2/64 on detached service with other portion of Battalion; pres. 3/64-8/64, w/his own horse; postwar roster state he was in 10th Va. Arty.; m/2 Agnes Robinson Moncure, 11/13/67; prominent in legal profession and was a Judge of Courts in Fairfax and Alexandria Counties; Superintendent of Fairfax County Schools 1873; on 1879 Hopkins Map of Fairfax County, Providence District, res. Chain Bridge Road north of Fairfax C.H., also adv. "Attorney at Law" on Hopkins Map of Fairfax C.H.; Secretary of the Mutual Telegraph Co. (between Fairfax & Vienna) 1885; represented Fairfax County in General Assembly 1885-1887; elected County Judge of Fairfax and Alexandria Counties, served until his death; member of John Q. Marr Camp U.C.V.; d. 4/25/97; named by Sgt. Geo. W. Shreve in letter to the Editor Fairfax Herald 12/26/1919, p. 3 he was, "our songster and poet", brother of Pvt. John C. Chichester, 1st VA Cav; 1st cousin of Lt. Ashton Chichester, McGregor's Battery, Stuart's Horse Arty., & cousin of Capt. Arthur M.B. chichester, Engineer Corps, CSA., Pvt. Willie E. Colston, Co. B, 43rd Battalion Va. Cavalry, Pvt. Beverly R. Mason, 4th Va. Cavalry, Pvt. John S. & Pvt. Landon R. Mason, 43rd Battalion Va. Cavalry, Surg. Randolph F. & Lt. William P. Chichester was a Mason and a Vestryman in the Zion Episcopal Church in Fairfax, VA. By the time of his death, he was the Senior Warden of Zion (now, Truro Episcopal). A plaque to his memory is in the Truro Chapel. His funeral was held at Zion and he was buried in the Moncure-Chichester Cemetery at "Glencairne" in Stafford Co., VA.
His second wife, Agnes Robinson Moncure, was the daughter of Judge R.C.L. Moncure of Stafford Co. Judge Moncure was a Chief Justice of the Virginia Supreme Court of Appeals.
Chichester was survived by five sons and two daughters. His son, Richard Henry Lee Chichester, followed in his grandfather's footsteps and became a member of the Supreme Court of Appeals of Virginia.
In 1873, while Daniel Chichester was Superintendent of Fairfax County Schools, a two-story brick elementary school was built for the village of Providence (now Fairfax City). It stands today as the oldest brick school in Fairfax County and houses the city's Fairfax Musem and Visitors Center.
